DPP HANDS OUT BEER TO YOUTHS

    …activists condemn the party

    By Temwanani Gondwe

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is facing strong condemnation from youth activists following the circulation of a viral video clip showing young party supporters clad in the party regalia distributing Chibuku opaque beer to fellow youths during a political gathering.

The video, which has triggered widespread concern, shows visibly intoxicated youths chanting political slogans while others stagger with beer packets bought and handed out by DPP operatives.

The footage has not only raised questions about the party’s engagement with young people but also sparked a broader debate on the moral responsibilities of political institutions towards the youth.

Emmanuel Katsabola, Executive Director of the Young Politicians Association of Malawi, did not mince words in condemning the incident.

“That kind of exploitation of the youth is unacceptable,” said Katsabola in an interview. “The party that wants to go into government cannot be distributing beer to young people instead of restraining them from such behaviour. It is not just a bad example, it is dangerous.”

Katsabola said political parties must nurture the political consciousness of young people, not reduce them to tools of intoxicated fanfare.

“This kind of political engagement is archaic. Young people should be equipped with civic education and policy knowledge, not Chibuku. If a party has to sedate its followers to earn loyalty, then it has nothing meaningful to offer,” said Katsabola.

His sentiments were echoed by Chikondi Mussa, a youth rights advocate who described the incident as a deliberate attempt to distract young people from demanding accountability.

“It is disheartening to see a party that ruled this country for close to a decade normalising such irresponsible behaviour. Giving beer to the youth is a form of political sedation, it numbs them to critical thinking and blinds them to real issues like unemployment, access to education and health services,” said Mussa.

Norman Paulos Chisale: The man who leads a violence DPP youth apparatus

Mussa further challenged the DPP leadership to apologise and publicly commit to more responsible forms of youth engagement.

“Instead of this reckless conduct, the DPP should be organising policy clinics and entrepreneurship workshops for young people. If the youth are the future, then what kind of future is being built here?” she asked.

Political analyst Victor Chipeta also weighed in on the matter, warning that the DPP’s approach could backfire as Malawians are becoming increasingly alert to political gimmicks.

“While distributing beer may win cheers and short-term loyalty, it does long-term damage to the party’s image. It reduces political mobilisation to intoxicated chanting rather than meaningful dialogue. Malawians are watching, and many will not take a party seriously if this is how it engages the youth,” said Chipeta.

Chipeta said the video reflects a broader crisis within the DPP’s internal culture, one that lacks a clear vision for youth development and instead resorts to populist tactics.

“As we approach the next general elections, parties need to understand that the youth vote is not just about numbers, it is about values, trust and vision. Beer will not fix anything. Chibuku will not provide their needs. The party needs to do better,” said Chipeta.

Despite the backlash, DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba has not issued any official response, further fueling public suspicion that the party does not intend to take responsibility for the incident.

The incident comes shortly after President Lazarus Chakwera, the Malawi Congress Party’s presidential candidate, engaged with the youth through platforms such as SONA for the Youth, the Malawi Podcast and Mijedo Television.

    TOBACCO GROWERS SMILE EAR-TO-EAR

…praise Chakwera over high prices fetching the leaf

    By Temwanani Gondwe

Tobacco farmers are now smiling all the way to the bank as their sweat is being handsomely rewarded at the market floors through record high prices fetching their tobacco.

Malawi Focus has been monitoring the pricing trend of tobacco since the market was officially opened by President Lazarus Chakwera on April 9, 2025, at Kanengo on April 11, 2025.

Lilongwe Marketing Floors opened with mixed fortunes as the market was flooded with both poor and quality tobacco. However, average prices remained relatively high as compared to the same period last year, according to the Tobacco Commission(TC) the tobacco industry regulator.

Most of the tobacco fetched an average of $2 and that has been the status quo till today.

At Chinkhoma, the market opened with a market range of $1.40 and $3.36 per kilogram, a development which delighted most growers.

On Friday last week, a 43 seconds video went viral of a tobacco grower identified as Luka Nkusa from Bowe in Dowa who is heard in the background praising Chakwera for listening to their grievances by improving the pricing on the market.

“Pempho lathu laveka…iyi nde Chinkhoma iyi mukuionayi.Pempho lathu laveka, pulezidenti uyungwatonse osatiso wa munthu mmodzi ayi.Ubwino wa pulezidenti wathu sakhala kumva, zigwilana ndi Super D odula uja. Iyiyi ndi okoshoni, sindikudziwa kuti ku mgwilizano kukhala bwanji [Our worries have been addressed. This is Chinkhoma Market Floors, and President Chakwera is a listening President and he belongs to us all and he is not for one individual. The prices will make farmers now afford to purchase Super D type of fertilizer. These prices you see are for auction tobacco and I am not sure what will become of tobacco under contract farming, but at least for auction, we are sorted out in terms of good prices],” Nkusa is heard in the video.

Tobacco price tags in the video show high prices of $3.20, and $3.25 which delighted most growers who witnessed the opening of the market apart from Nkusa.

Tama Tobacco Trust President Abel Kalima Banda said in an interview that since the market was opened, prices have been “on a fair note,” and commended the government for enforcing good prices this year.

Banda told Capital FM Radio that he does not see any reason for growers to protest over low prices, stating that the prices are better and historical.

He said the tobacco which floods the market during the early days is usually of poor quality and attracts low prices.

“In fact, some tobacco which has been sold was even not supposed to be sold because its quality was below par. The owners of that tobacco should just thank heavens to have their tobacco sold otherwise I don’t see any reason why growers should stage protests because this government has been so kind and considerate when it comes to tobacco pricing,” said Banda.

Speaking at the official launch of the 2024/2025 Tobacco Market Season at the Auction Holdings Ground in Kanengo, Lilongwe, Chakwera underscored the profound impact of tobacco growers in anchoring the fragile Malawi Kwacha and fueling the nation’s foreign exchange reserves—lifelines for the country’s broader development agenda.

“Tobacco farmers are not mere contributors, they are economic stabilisers,” the President proclaimed to a crowd of industry leaders, government officials, and growers. “Their sweat strengthens our currency and sustains our economy. It is imperative that we shield their interests.”

Speaking earlier before the President, TC Chairperson Godfrey Chapola lauded President Chakwera’s leadership, describing it as instrumental in securing fair market conditions for farmers.

Chapola revealed that this year’s production had soared to 170 million kilogrammes, an impressive leap from 133 million kilograms last season.

    KABAMBE IRKS ADVISORS AGAIN

    0

    By Temwanani Gondwe

Dalitso Kabambe, the United Transformation Movement (UTM) presidential candidate, has once again sparked controversy within his party’s Advisory Council by engaging in alliance talks with other political parties without consulting the Council.

Earlier this year, in January, the Council issued a stern warning to Kabambe, cautioning him against self-sabotage after he accused members of the governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) of corruption.

This accusation was deemed unjustifiable, especially since Kabambe and several UTM officials faced criminal charges themselves.

Over the weekend, Kabambe met with United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi and Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) leader Enock Chihana to discuss forming an electoral alliance ahead of the September 16 tripartite elections.

However, he failed to inform or consult the Advisory Council about these discussions. According to inside sources, the Council was upset to learn about the alliance talks through the media.

This prompted Newton Kambala, the Council’s chairperson, to summon Kabambe for a meeting. Kabambe, however, refused to attend, claiming his actions were in the best interest of the party.

Kambala reminded Kabambe that no one holds a monopoly on wisdom and urged him to heed the Council’s advice. Despite this, Kabambe dismissed the summons, further straining relations within the party.

Sources within the Council expressed shock at Kabambe’s behaviour, with growing suspicions that he might be undermining the party intentionally.

Kabambe has reportedly ignored advice from both the Council and the national executive committee, leading some to question his leadership style.

The Council is now deliberating on how to address multiple concerns regarding Kabambe’s conduct.

Recently, he has altered campaign schedules and whistle-stop tours organised by the party’s campaign team, replacing them with his programme.

Kabambe has justified these changes by citing security concerns and prioritising his safety, but he has refused to consult party officials even on these matters.

Back in January, tensions between Kabambe and the Advisory Council were already high.

The Council, composed mostly of officials who lost during the party’s national elective conference last year, criticised Kabambe for accusing the MCP administration of corruption while many UTM members facing serious criminal charges.

They also disapproved of Kabambe’s public statements, including his unrealistic economic promises, such as maintaining the value of the Malawi kwacha for five years and making it appreciate quickly once in power.

The Council argued that Kabambe’s remarks on corruption and fraud were putting UTM members under scrutiny. Despite their advice, Kabambe dismissed their concerns, accusing some Council members of jealousy and envy.

Political scientist Dennis Mchokero weighed in on the matter, describing Kabambe’s disregard for the Council as dangerous.

“No one can run a political party single-handedly. He needs wise counsel. These are senior members of the party with experience. Kabambe must realise he is a leader, not the owner of the party,” said Mchokero.

    CHISALE IS UNTOUCHABLE

    0

    Writes Lyson Sibande

So, ku DPP, you displaced people like Dr Kabambe so that Chisale can take over? Ndinu chipani chomvetsa chisoni kwambiri.

Now, ask yourself seriously why Chisale is messing up your campaign and yet APM is just watching.

In fact, the most shocking thing is not that Chisale akumayankhula zoduka mutu, not at all. It is the fact that Chisale never praises APM. Listen to Chisale very well. He is always praising himself.

So why is Chisale always praising himself and presenting himself as the power behind DPP when it is APM who will be on the ballot? Why is chisale campaigning for himself and praising himself?

The most important question, however, is, why is APM not doing anything about Chisale?

I can only suspect two things: APM is really too old that he is no longer thinking straight. He is unable to think and understand that Chisale is messing up the campaign.

Secondly, APM knows that Chisale is messing up the campaign, but he is scared of him because Chisale is sitting on certain dirt of APM.

Possibly, there are certain skeletons in APM’s closet that only Chisale knows and APM fears that if he throws Chisale under the bus, Chisale would expose him and destroy him. So, Chisale somehow black mails APM and holds him at ransom.

Otherwise, Chisale can not be undermining APM and the entire DPP leadership without anyone having the balls to take action.

And if DPP cannot handle one confused person in the party, how can they run a country and solve our problems?

ANALYSTS SLAM DPP OVER RIGGING CLAIMS

    0

    By Blessings Chatha

Political analysts have cautioned the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to stop uttering unjustifiable and sensitive claims that the governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is plotting to rig the September 16 General Elections.

The analysts have warned that such claims have the potential to incite violence and undermine the electoral process.

The DPP’s national youth director, Norman Chisale, claimed over the weekend at a rally in Lilongwe that if the governing MCP attempts to rig the elections, it would meet its match in him because he also knows how to rig elections.

Chisale even challenged that he has all the expertise to alter the electoral outcome.

A Mzuzu-based political analyst, Bernard Matchumbuza, said Chisale’s remarks are dangerous and could lead to chaos and violence.

He argued that the DPP is aware it lacks the capacity to win the forthcoming elections and is deliberately creating such lies to use as an excuse when they lose.

“Good thing is that well-meaning Malawians are aware DPP is running a failed propaganda. Their attempt to rig the 2019 elections through the use of tippex failed,” said Matchumbuza.

“Even the claims that Chisale is an expert at rigging elections are empty and without basis. He cannot rig elections, he does not have that capacity.

“His plan is to steal money from the DPP president Arthur Peter Mutharika. He wants to lie to him that it is possible to rig and demand money to enable him to execute that evil plan. He wants to simply pocket that money. This man is a fraudster,” he said.

He said it was completely unfair to make false claims against the governing MCP, which is working hard and putting up a smart campaign to win the polls.

Another political analyst, Lonjezo Maseko, warned Chisale and the DPP to desist from spreading falsehoods during the campaign period. He emphasised that political leaders must mind their tongues and avoid making inflammatory remarks.

“Let them go out to rallies and sell their parties based on real facts, not such lies. They know they have nothing to offer Malawians and they have resorted to telling lies. They must be responsible enough,” said Maseko.

Another political analyst based in Blantyre, Sipho Chilemba, said false claims of election rigging can have far-reaching consequences, threatening the stability and integrity of democratic processes.

He said such allegations, when unfounded, can erode public trust in electoral systems, making it difficult for citizens to accept legitimate outcomes.

This distrust can lead to widespread discontent and even civil unrest.

“In fact, baseless accusations can incite violence among supporters of political parties, creating an environment of fear and hostility. In extreme cases, this can escalate into clashes that harm innocent civilians and disrupt societal harmony.

“The propagation of false rigging claims also undermines the efforts of electoral bodies and stakeholders who work tirelessly to ensure free and fair elections. It tarnishes their credibility and casts doubt on their ability to conduct transparent polls,” said Chilemba.

The political analyst said political leaders have a responsibility to uphold the principles of democracy by refraining from making inflammatory statements. Instead, he said, they should focus on presenting their policies and engaging in constructive dialogue with voters.

“Ultimately, the spread of false rigging claims is a disservice to the nation. It distracts from the real issues that need addressing and jeopardises the democratic values that Malawians hold dear. Responsible leadership and truthful communication are essential to fostering unity and progress during election periods,” he said.

    MCP HINTS ON ALLIANCE

    0

    …SG says discussions have started

    By Kondwani Banda

The ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has signaled its intention to enter into an electoral alliance with other political parties ahead of the crucial September 16 presidential, parliamentary and local government elections.

Speaking during a political rally in Dowa, MCP Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda confirmed that the party has already initiated discussions with other political stakeholders but stopped short of naming the potential allies.

“Malawi Congress Party is willing to form an alliance with any party that is available, and we have already started discussions with some political parties,” said Chimwendo Banda.

“However, I cannot mention the parties at this point. The discussions are ongoing, and we are exploring common ground,” he said.

This development comes as political parties begin to position themselves for what is expected to be one of the most competitive elections since the dawn of multiparty democracy.

The adoption of the 50+1 electoral system has changed the political landscape significantly, making it difficult for a single party to secure an outright majority, especially in the presidential race.

Chimwendo Banda’s remarks have ignited a flurry of speculation about possible partners, especially considering that MCP led the Tonse Alliance in 2020, which dislodged the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) from power.

That alliance, which included United Transformation Movement (UTM), People’s Party (PP) and several smaller parties, was hailed as a model of opposition unity at the time.

According to political analyst Chrispin Sauzande, the MCP’s move to keep alliance options open is not only strategic but necessary under the current electoral framework.

“The 50+1 system compels political parties to be realistic about their chances. Even dominant parties like MCP cannot afford to be complacent,” said Sauzande.

“Given its status as the ruling party, MCP is in a good position to attract smaller parties looking for relevance and influence in the next administration,” he said.

Another political commentator, Mary Chipeta, believes the MCP’s approach to alliances this time will be more calculated and focused on compatibility rather than convenience.

“In 2020, the Tonse Alliance was formed largely to remove the DPP. The motivation was common. This time, MCP will need to think more about ideological and operational alignment,” said Chipeta.

Chipeta said MCP’s ability to offer tangible benefits through incumbency makes it an attractive partner for many smaller parties that lack reach and resources.

As the September elections approach, attention will now turn to how other major parties such as the DPP and the remnants of UTM position themselves.

However, the UTM, United Democratic Front, and Alliance for Democracy recently announced that they are in discussions about the possibility of forming an alliance for the September elections.

KALIATI SENT CHAKWERA ‘HITMEN’ TO NIGERIA

    0

    By Faith Simbi

“During the evening meeting as asked by Hon. Kaliati, she introduced a new mission as she addressed us that Chilima was happy with the results. She, therefore, instructed me and Chinedu to eliminate President Dr. Chakwera. She went further to say that since Dr. Chilima was free of criminal cases, he could easily take over the presidency,” Mwale disclosed the startling plot.

Angella Chifundo Mwale, the prime witness in the case in which former cabinet minister Patricia Kaliati is accused of conspiring to kill President Lazarus Chakwera, left Malawi for Nigeria on March 31, 2024, alongside a Nigeria identified as Frank Daniel Chinedu to engage in a high-stakes spiritual transaction with God Papa, a renowned Nigerian ritualist.

God Papa is famous on the continent for his involvement in cult practices aimed at political elevation and emancipation.

The plan was to influence the ‘sangoma,’ to bestow spiritual favours on the late Vice President Saulos Chilima and thereafter kill Chakwera so that the former would inherit government.

This whole plot was called “a mission of favour, peace and restoration,” according to a court-sanctioned witness statement of Mwale which Malawi Focus has seen.

“The visa process started and Mr. Josephy Odala (another suspect who was introduced in our last edition) catered for all expenses of this visa process. All bank deposits with Standard Bank City Centre branch and embassy of Nigeria were made. When the visa was ready, Mr. Odala’s payment got stuck and in the end, the first visa expired,” narrates Mwale.

She told the court that during the processing of the first visa, they co-opted Chinedu, a Nigerian who was at that time living in Malawi, to assist them in the fast-tracking of their movement and communication in Nigeria.

According to the travel logistics, the agreement was that Mwale, Odala and Chinedu should borrow money elsewhere with an assurance from Kaliati to refund the money “following the results.”

At this point, the records show Chilima’s curiosity and interest had been aroused further in the mission as he wanted to have the results of the plot sooner so he could get spiritual favours before ascending to Presidency.

“Mr. Odala and I borrowed money from people and I used my motor vehicle registration number BY 6590 Mazda Demio, silver in colour, 2010 model and a house situated in area 51 in Lilongwe as collateral. We raised K15 million on 40 percent interest per month,” she explained.

Part of the money raised was used for an air ticket for her to go to Nigeria and come back and also for Chinedu to go to Nigeria, one way.

Mwale said they were initially planning to go to Nigeria alongside Odala but failed due to a “shortage of money. Odala failed to make it to Nigeria despite processing two visas which all expired in the process.

“On March 31, 2024, Frank [Chinedu] left for Nigeria. We reached Nigeria on April 1, 2024. We delayed starting our mission there because the one who was supposed to lead us to God Papa was out for his business in Ghana. He came back after a week and led us to God Papa,” said Mwale.

Upon reaching there, Mwale said God Papa welcomed them and immediately instructed them to call their bosses [Kaliati and Chilima].

But God Papa only managed to speak to Kaliati and Odala back home who indeed confirmed that the two, Mwale and Chinedu were duly sent by Kaliati with the blessings of Chilima.

“After confirmation, all went well. All the processes were either captured or pictured and sent to Kaliati who in turn was also sending to Chilima,” said Mwale.

    Positive results yielded

While in Nigeria, God Papa assured the team that the results would come out positively within 21 days and true to his words, Chilima’s corruption case was discontinued and President Chakwera reinstated him and started delegating him state duties as Vice President, according to the court records.

Chilima’s charges were dropped by the state on May 7, 2024, after the state prosecutor filed a notice for the case to be discontinued. No reasons were given for the decision.

He was arrested in November 2022 on allegations that he accepted money in exchange for awarding government contracts. He denied the charges.

Kaliati pockets K200 million from SKC for ‘services rendered’

Court records show that upon being reinstated, Chilima was over the moon and could not believe the magic behind his freedom.

“The Vice President was happy. Dr. Chilima indeed paid Hon. Kaliati for the services rendered. It amounted to N100 million which is an equivalent of K200 million. We were instructed to go back to the ‘kiosk’ to collect the money but later we were told to hold for the evening meeting on another ‘important issue’ which Hon. Kaliati wanted to raise,” Mwale testified.

However, despite the order from Malawi through Kaliati that their mission in Nigeria should hold on to another pertinent issue, God Papa was not amused as he wanted his payment for the bestowment of spiritual favours on Chilima.

“During the evening meeting as asked by Hon. Kaliati, she introduced a new mission as she addressed us that Chilima was happy with the results. She therefore instructed me and Chinedu to eliminate President Dr. Chakwera. She went further to say that since Dr. Chilima was free of criminal cases, he could easily take over the presidency,” Mwale disclosed the chilling plot.

    APM STRUGGLES TO WALK

    …public appearance exposes deteriorating health

    By Faith Simbi

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) President Arthur Peter Mutharika’s public appearance on Thursday revived unrelenting debate about his fading and worsening health on several social media platforms.

Last weekend, DPP was forced to cancel the memorial service of its founder late Bingu wa Mutharika at Mpumulo wa Bata in Thyolo and reports were rife that that the cancellation was due to Mutharika’s waning health.

Reports were also rife that plans were underway to have the frail politician airlifted to South Africa for medical attention.

However, on Thursday afternoon, Mutharika defied all odds and travelled to Khwisa in Balaka to attend the funeral of MacFriday M’madi, a young boy aged 16 born to Getrude Mutharika’s young sister and was a student at Maranatha Boys Academy.

The young boy perished on April 8, 2025, in a road carnage at Mbulumbuzi Trading Centre in Chiradzulu as he was travelling in public transport heading for Mangochi for a holiday.

Mutharika arrived at the funeral alongside his wife, DPP’s Director of Youths Norman Chisale, DPP Secretary General Peter Mukhito, and other party members such as Rhoza Mbilizi, among others.

Despite his failing health, wife Gertrude and DPP members have dragged APM to funerals where he sits in pain waiting for the event to end

Upon arrival at the cemetery, according to video footage which is viral on social media, Mutharika appears to struggle to walk upright and normally as he is seen painfully leapfrogging his legs.

Clad in a black suit, a black necktie, and a white shirt, Mutharika is seen hobbling and floundering, forcing himself to walk clumsily as he moves towards his chair.

The same situation followed minutes later when he rose to wray a wreath as the footage shows him trudging in a weary and difficult manner towards the gravesite.

Meanwhile, the video has sparked unceasing debate with many repeatedly calling for DPP members to stop abusing the old man.

“It is now clear that this man is old and also badly sick. I doubt he will do the rigorous campaign ahead of elections,” wrote Enock Nkhalamba Shemu on Facebook.

Another sympathiser Mayeso Ntengula wrote: “We need that organisation which promotes the welfare of the elderly to talk to DPP officials so they stop this abuse of an old man. It is not on guys.”

During the funeral, Mukhito spoke on behalf of the ailing Mutharika and in his speech, he said the entire DPP family is shocked over the tragic loss of their beloved son, urging the M’madi family to remain steadfast in their faith during the trying moment.

The deceased was buried at exactly 16:23 and Mutharika and his wife were the first to lay wreaths.

    COURT EVIDENCE EXPOSES KALIATI

    0

… Angella Chifundo Mwale crucifies Akweni

…in a conspiracy to assassinate Chakwera case

    By Faith Simbi

Evidence presented by a prime witness in a case in which United Transformation Movement (UTM) Secretary General Patricia Kaliati is accused of conspiring to kill President Lazarus Chakwera has exposed the alleged plot in stark detail.

In a Police recorded statement which has been deposited with the court as evidence, Angella Chifundo Mwale alleges that Kaliati assembled a team of mafias and a spiritual ‘god’ based in Nigeria to kill Chakwera.

It is alleged that the abortive plot was hatched to benefit the late Vice President Saulos Chilima who could have ascended to power as dictated by the republican Constitution.

Kaliati strongly persuaded and convinced Chilima that the fallen vice president was the right heir to the country’s coveted throne.

The first goal, in liaison with Chilima, was to win a spiritual favour for the problem’ being faced by the late Chilima and when such favour was bestowed upon Chilima, Kaliati’s thirst remained unquenched as she further convinced Chilima to have Chakwera assassinated. Chilima agreed with the plan.

Chilima was answering corruption charges but all charges leveled against him were dropped on May 6, 2024.

He was arrested in 2022 over graft allegations after the country’s corruption watchdog, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) alleged he was rewarded for assisting Xaviar Limited and Malachitte FZE, two companies connected to British businessman Zuneth Sattar, to be awarded contracts by the Malawi government.

According to Mwale’s court evidence, Kaliati became so desperate last year so much, so that she met Mwale through a man identified as Josephy Odala.

Later he approached me and asked me to assist him in finding solutions for some problems,” Mwale recounts in a sworn witness statement at the court which Malawi Focus has seen and can report with authority.

The sworn statement was recorded by Superintendent M.J Kamphandira on 29 November 2024 who is a criminal investigator at Lingandzi Police.

“Joseph Odala narrated that Hon. Kaliati has got problems which need interventions. Then Joseph took me to area 44 in Lilongwe at the house of Hon, Kaliati. We were three of us, Hon. Kaliati, Josephy Odala and myself,” she narrates.

“Josephy Odala introduced me to Hon Patricia Kaliati, and Hon, Kaliati welcomed me. He (Odala) narrated that they were looking for a spiritual favour for the problem being faced by Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima. By then, Dr. Cjilima was answering corruption cases and the President stopped delegating him for official duties and their relationship was sour,” submits Mwale to the court.

Mwale said Kaliati and Odala told her directly that they wanted “someone who would help them so that the situation should normalise and Hon. Kaliati went on to say that they have tried in Malawi and Zambia but have spent too much money without any help.”

Kaliati asked Mwale if she could find a man who could do “genuine things” to bring the solutions so that Chilima would be freed.

At this juncture, Mwale assured Kaliati and Odala that she had a Nigerian friend and was the right person.

Malawi Focus understands that Mwale remained on high alert and conscious throughout to the extent that she had courageously asked Kaliati whether indeed Chilima was aware of the move.

Kaliati assured Mwale that Chilima was aware of such a move and that it was the fallen politician who was desperate for spiritual favours.

“I went further to request Kaliati to allow me to meet the Vice President on the matter. But Hon. Kaliati told me it was not possible due to the restrictions he was having. Instead, she called the Vice President in my presence and the call was so loud. Hon. Kaliati introduced the matter to Chilima,” Mwale told the court.

In his response, according to the witness statement, Chilima sounded worried, and confessed that he had previously spent money to buy spiritual favours but it did not materialise as ‘conmen and tricksters swindled him big time.’

However, in the same phone conversation, Kaliati kept on assuring Chilima that they had found the right person in Mwale who had a vast network of individuals when it came to attracting spiritual favours.

“Dr. Chilima accepted on condition that we use our resources and be refunded upon completion of the mission of favour, peace and restoration of his delegations. Hon. Kaliati, Odala and I all accepted,” she said.

Now that the four (Chilima, Kaliati, Odala and Mwale) have unanimously agreed. In the next edition, Malawi Focus delves into the circumstances of Chilima and Kaliati sanctioned the trip to Nigeria to buy ‘spiritual favours.”

APM SUMMONS OFFICIALS OVER STOLEN CARS

    0

    By Faith Simbi

Former Malawi leader Arthur Peter Mutharika has reportedly summoned five senior members of his opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) over allegations of stealing government motor vehicles during his tenure.

According to reliable sources, the summons came weeks after Malawi Focus reported that top officials were implicated in the theft of government vehicles, prompting an investigation by the Malawi Police Service.

The accused officials include Norman Chisale, the party’s National Director of Youth and Mutharika’s former personal bodyguard; Peter Mukhito, the party’s Secretary General and former Inspector General of Police; Chimwemwe Chipungu, a former Deputy Minister of Agriculture under the DPP regime; George Chaponda, a former Minister of Agriculture and current Leader of the Opposition; and William Susuwela, the Zomba Likangala legislator.

Upset by the scale of the alleged theft, Mutharika called the officials to his Page House in Mangochi to understand the situation and assess their readiness to clear their names.

“The former president is deeply saddened by the allegations due to their seriousness. He fears the accusations could tarnish the party’s image and is concerned that this occurred under his leadership,” a source revealed.

The source added that while Susuwela was absent, citing an excuse, the other officials attended the meeting.

“The former president feels embarrassed that his associates were involved in a scandal of this magnitude. He worries that any action by authorities could negatively impact the party’s campaign,” said the source.

The Anti-Motor Vehicle Theft Unit of the police in Lilongwe is reportedly investigating the matter.
